Castilla-La Mancha, the largest vineyard in the world

Known as the authentic winery of Europe, the vineyard of Castilla-La Mancha is perfectly defined by the location of its lands. The Provinces of Toledo, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Albacete and Guadalajara are the ideal scenarios for the production of some of the best wines in the world.

Manchuela, Valdepeñas, La Mancha, Almansa, Uclés, Méntrida, Mondéjar and Ribera del Júcar enjoy great recognition in the markets. In recent decades, after great efforts, they have managed to position themselves as wines of great international quality.

In the same way, the Manchego vineyard can boast of having diverse Paid wines. Under this name are included the most peculiar and exclusive wines that, in addition, have a rigorous geographical protection.

Since they have very specific characteristics of soil, climate and grape variety, are ‘awarded’ with the Payment Denomination. The objective of this recognition is clear: maintain and improve the qualities of the wines over the years. 

Castilla-La Mancha, a vineyard of enviable qualities

According to data extracted in 2019 from the Survey on Areas and Crop Yields (ESYRCE), in Castilla-La Mancha exist 468,029 hectares of vineyards. This figure has been reduced compared to the previous period, whose measurement was at the barrier of 473,811 hectares.

Of all of them, around 250,000 hectares, that is, more than half, are grouped in the production area of La Mancha. However, other denominations such as Manchuela are also not far behind.

After its formal constitution in 2000, it extends over a vineyard area of 5,472 hectares. Albacete and Cuenca the treatment and exploitation of these very productive lands are distributed (3,340 and 2,132 hectares between each province, respectively).

The passage of time on the Manchego vineyard

Specifically, the 12th century has been the subject of numerous investigations by historians, both Spanish and international. This time is established as the beginning of the first tasks of exploitation of the vineyard of Castilla-La Mancha. 

A thorough and precise work aimed at making the most of the advantages of an essentially continental climate. Extremely warm summers and winters with very high cold records are the perfect tandem to present wines capable of banishing any prejudice.

Similarly, these products are also referenced in the famous book Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. In its pages there is already evidence of the existence of a wine capable of fall in love with palates of the most illustrious characters of the time.

And if we try to go a step further, some more daring historians have ventured to sign that the origin of La-Mancha wines is established in the controversial Roman times. However, we do not have any formal records capable of certifying this fact with certainty.

The true essence of the vineyard of Castilla-La Mancha

As we have mentioned just a few lines, kilometers and kilometers of La Mancha vineyards in which the sun subtly affects the leaves of the vines.
