Thus, in the region of La Manchuela, where about 768,400 hectolitres of wine are produced annually, about 72% is made with red varieties. The red wines of La Manchuela receive prestigious international awards every year, which confirms the high quality of this wine.

History of red wine

It is difficult to specify the exact date of production of the first cup: the oldest specimens of vines belong to the Late Cretaceous period. The oldest vine could have appeared about 70 million years ago! Of course, at the time they did not think about winemaking, although, who knows, perhaps dinosaurs liked to have a drink to the sound of the waves.

In the region of La Manchuela, in the southeast of Spain, various civilizations have marked the personality of the place with events and experiences where the culture of wine has created a precious heritage for more than 2,400 years. Over the years, a tradition of wine production has been formed, which is carefully preserved by today's winemakers.

The red wines of La Manchuela are distinguished by their intensity of color, which oscillates between cherry and cherry red with very vivid bluish and violet tones. Its passage through the mouth is long, persistent and wide in flavors.

People have been talking about the benefits of red wine for thousands of years. Modern scientists claim that, in reasonable quantities, red wine can cure many diseases and prolong youth. It also reduces hunger and the tendency to be overweight. In addition, red wine improves brain function and strengthens the immune system, reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure; slows down the aging of the auditory organs.

Grape growing areas

Keep in mind that the taste and quality of the wine depend on where the grapes grow. From the same variety, grown, for example, in Argentina and Spain, completely different drinks are obtained. The grapes used to make the red wines of La Manchuela grow between the valleys of the emblematic Júcar and Cabriel rivers.

The region of La Manchuela is sometimes known as ‘La Mesopotamia Manchega’, referring to the historic land bathed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The territory between rivers is one of the keys that define the red wines of La Manchuela.

Grape varieties for the production of red wines

The grape variety It is very important to understand a wine. More than a dozen grape varieties are traditionally used for red wine production. Among the most famous are Cabernet Sauvignon, Bottle, Grenache, Graciano, Malbec, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah, Bobal.

Most producers of red wines from La Manchuela prefer the Bobal variety: almost 41% of the wines are made with this grape variety. It gives a wine more acidic and less alcoholic than most Spanish varieties. The grape has many names: It is also known as Utiel, Balau, Blauro benicarló, Boal, Bobal noir, Bobos, Carignan d’Espagne, Moravio etc.

From this type of grape, for example, the winery VegaTolosa elaborates Bobal Icon 2018. After 6 months of ageing in French oak barrels, this wine has a great taste, is vegan and organic like most of the red wines of La Manchuela. The Bobal Icon 2018 wine is characterized by intense ruby color, on the nose it gives us memories of plum and cherry jam, with notes of spicy herbs and minerals.

You can also mention Wine Finca Los Halcones, raised in Foudres from French oak for 24 months. This is red wine of great intensity and unique character with the intense garnet color. This red wine has won gold at the Wine Up, EnoTurismo Wine & Tourism, Singapore Awards 2020, as well as many other prestigious awards.

Production of red winess of La Manchuela

During the production of red wines it is important to harvest at the right time of ripening of the fruits of the vine. For select wines, the grapes are collected in small baskets and transported in this way to the winery, to prevent the grapes from crushing and starting their fermentation during transport, so that the whole process can be controlled in the winery.

In the production of the red wines of La Manchuela, not only all the necessary regulations are observed, but also all the millenary traditions of this wine region.

Several methods for making red wine are possible: of carbonic maceration, with whole and confined grapes, and another in which the scraping of the bunch is removed and the grapes are broken before fermentation by yeasts. For a good maintenance of the color of the wine, the origin grape has to have a good degree of maturation, so that its levels of anthocyanins (red pigmentation) and tannins are adequate, so that the latter help to preserve the former so that the wine does not fade over time.

Classification of red wines

Red wines can be classified according to the ageing time of the wines. Thus, the following types are distinguished:

  • Young or of the year Wines that practically, between 2 and 4 months after the harvest, are ready for consumption.
  • Parenting They have spent between six and twelve months in the barrel, and it remains resting in the bottle until two years after its elaboration
  • Reservation At least one year is spent in the barrel and rests in the bottle until three years have elapsed since its preparation.
  • Great reserve At least 18 months in the barrel and the rest in the bottle, can be marketed after the sixth year. 

It should be noted that whatever the Red wines of La Manchuela that you choose, from Tempranillo, Bobal or Syrah, Young or Breeding grapes, you will always enjoy the unforgettable aroma of this drink. It is unknown whether it is possible to find the veritas in wine, but pleasure.
